Brighten The Corner Where You Are

Some years ago, I was pondering on how I could make a difference in the world we live in and it seemed like such an enormous task. As I pondered, I remembered a hymn we used to sing in primary school:

Do not wait until some deed of greatness you may do,
Do not wait to shed your light afar;
To the many duties ever near you now be true,
Brighten the corner where you are.

Brighten the corner where you are!
Brighten the corner where you are!
Someone far from harbor you may guide across the bar;
Brighten the corner where you are!

– Ina D. Ogdon, pub.1913

Many of us are looking for ways to make the world a better place and often wonder what we can do and how we can go about making a difference. This hymn is a reminder that we can make a difference wherever we find ourselves.

A smile here…
A compliment there…
Helping someone struggling with their luggage…
Giving a helping hand to a neighbour…
Volunteering in your local community centre…
Working with youths in your community…
The list is endless…

All of these make a difference and can create a domino effect that can be far reaching than we realise.

So, if you’re ever wondering what you can do to make a difference in our world, consider brightening the corner where you are.
