Happy Easter friends! We’re enjoying a lovely long weekend here in the UK with Good Friday and Easter Monday being public holidays. Definitely a very much welcomed break.
Thought I’ll share a free pattern that I created and wrote almost two years ago during Easter – The Cross Beanie. For me as a Christian, and for Christians the world over, the Cross recalls the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, the redeeming benefits of His love for humanity and His death on the Cross of Calvary.
The Cross Beanie is a simple hat pattern with the cross knitted in a contrast colour. It uses super chunky yarn and is a quick project to work on.

Supplies & tools:
- Approx 65 yards of any super bulky (weight 6) yarn, I used Robin Super Chunky
- US 13/9mm 16″ (40cm) circular needles
- US 13/9mm DPNs
- Stitch marker
- Darning/tapestry needle
Gauge: 10 sts and 14 rows = 10cm/4″
Finished size: Teenager–Adult (to fit 18″–24″)
Abbreviations:
K – Knit
P – Purl
MC – Main colour
CC – Contrasting colour
K2tog – Knit two together
Sts – Stitches
DPNs – Double Pointed Needles
Pattern:
With MC, cast on 46 sts
Place marker and join to knit in the round, being careful not to twist stitches
Round 1-8: K1, P1 around
Round 9-11: K1 MC around
Round 12: K6 MC, K3 CC, K MC to end of round
Round 13-17: Repeat round 12
Round 18: K4 MC, K7 CC, K MC to end of round
Round 19-20: Repeat round 18
Round 21-23: Repeat round 12
Round 24-27: K1 MC around
Decrease rounds (all with MC):
Round 1: *K4, K2tog, repeat from * around until last four sts, then K4 (39 sts)
Round 2: *K3, K2tog, repeat from * around until last four sts, then K4 (32 sts)
Round 3: *K2, K2tog, repeat from * around (24 sts) *Switch to DPNs*
Round 4: *K1, K2tog, repeat from * around (16 sts)
Round 5: *K2tog, repeat from * around (8 sts)
Cut yarn leaving a long tail. Using a darning/tapestry needle, pull it through the remaining sts. Pull tight, weave in all ends and you’re done!
